I’ve taken about 2 years of Chinese in school, but want to stray away from formal words since they aren’t as practical in a real world conversation. Thanks!

For “shelflife”:
colloquialism is not ??
I agreed with “shelflife” that all Chinese drama have their local accent, you would notice the difference if you watch Mandarin drama of China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
On top of that, there would be a lot of phrase or words that have been using specifically in their country, which you might not understand at all. (even a Taiwan Chinese watching a drama with scripts written by a Singapore Chinese, that Taiwanese might not understand some of the phrase too)
You need someone good in Chinese to introduce you the appropriate modern drama for you to learn, best with Chinese subtitles. Otherwise you might pick the wrong one and learn it the wrong way.

Chinese drama shows is very different for you to learn Chinese. You should watch a wider variety of shows so you pick up more.
So I suggest you make Chinese native friends and take some free Chinese courses on line. There is a “Nihao Chinese”program which is a free trail on line!!!

you will find a surprise.

Well, how much you learn really depends on what kind of dramas you watch. Try to watch a wider variety of shows so you pick up more.
Lots of actors have some accent or other and you might pick that up and start pronouncing the words in a way not commonly used. So be careful. And Chinese period dramas are not very good material to learn modern conversational Chinese from. Just so you know.
